Lois. Monstrous Encounters is a live streamed motion capture dance performance. Shown live simultaneously on-site and remotely, it brought together three synchronised MoCap data inputs from dancers in Malta, Leicester, and New York into a CGI world built in Unreal Engine, based in London.
The performance was shown as a three-channel projection at St. James' Hatcham Church, Goldsmiths, University of London, and broadcast live on YouTube part of Being Human Festival (2022)
Created during the Goldsmiths MoCap Streamer residency.

Lois. Monstrous encoutners takes its starting point from Lois Jessup's account of a fictional-factual encounter with humanoid life forms beneath an archaeological burial site - the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum. The site is in constant transformation: humidity, light damage, CO2, the slow deterioration brought by human visits. But deterioration is also opening. Where humans see damage, lichen, mould, and microorganisms find new territory. The Hypogeum shapeshifts, and something grows in the space that opens.
Stills. Live stream from Unreal Engine.
The performance begins at the moment of emergence, when human and more-than-human life forms encounter the Primary World, and encounter one another. The monstrous self and the monstrous other move through transformation: interior, exterior, uncontainable. After a period of isolation and disconnection, how does one relate to each other's worlds. Can certain experiences be related to at all? And whose voice is considered valid enough to be believed?
